Custom Cakes - What am I worth? (1 Viewer)

If you're in the business of making custom cakes or you're starting out, then you may have come across people who want the earth but aren't willing to pay for it.

Just remember, if you have the talent and people constantly come back for your amazing cakes, it's worth keeping in mind a few key details.

As in life, you get what you pay for and sometimes, let's face it, in this industry, it isn't always the case. How many times have you done that extra few hours or made a mistake and started again? I have known people work through the night to finish a cake and know they won't get paid for those twilight hours.

In light of the hard work endured, there is a lot of customer satisfaction with cakes, especially if you see it through to delivery, and there's nothing better than seeing your recipients face light up with glee at their first glance of your creation.

So with that in mind, remember these few rules to keep you motivated.
  • Cake Prices - Never sell yourself short and always know your worth. Making cakes is a tough business but also one that can be very rewarding.
  • Always negotiate the price first or determine the client's budget before spending numerous hours on a project.
  • Remember the classes you took, the books you read, the videos you watched and the endless hit and misses in the kitchen that gave you all your baking experience; this is what the client is paying for.
And if that wasn't enough, here is an additional list of things you may not have thought about that the client should also be paying for.
  • Design
  • Ideas
  • Creativity
  • Research
  • Tools/Equipment/Decorations
  • Shopping Time
  • Ingredients
  • Problems/Troubleshooting Time
  • Prep Time
  • Bake Time
  • Cool Time/Tidy Up Time
  • Decorating Time
  • Delivery Time
  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Water
  • Insurance
  • Taxes
Just because you make a cake in your kitchen doesn't mean you're any less of a baker, so be sure to get paid for all the love, sweat and tears that go into it, because let's face it, we've all cried over cake at some point!

Remember you are worth it, you're good at what you do, and people respect you for having a voice.

So own yours, be fierce and go create magic! 👩‍🍳

Well said Angie, I'm sure your post will give future bakers a good grounding for working out a realistic cost.
