Here is a quick and easy tutorial showing you how to make edible ladybird toppers.
They can be made to the exact size you require and are perfect for both cakes and cupcakes alike.

Not only are they cute to look at, but they will brighten the dullest day. They're also very easy to make and can be adapted to your theme.

Roll the red icing in the palm of your hands and form a small ball.

Take the ball and flatten it in between your thumb and index finger.

Place the ball back onto the mat.

Lightly score the red ball down the centre with the flat edge of a knife or palette knife. Be careful not to cut through the icing.

Ensure you can see the indent.

Now roll a smaller black ball with the black icing. This will be used as the head/face.

Stick this to the red icing using a small paintbrush and a little water or edible glue. I used the heat from my hands to stick the two pieces together.

Now, take the edible pen and start placing random dots on the wings of the ladybird.

And there you have it, an easy ladybird ready to eat.

Be sure to make them in various sizes and place the dots on the wings in different places/formations.

Take a small piece of white icing fondant.

Roll the piece into two small balls and size them against your black ball to ensure they are the correct size.

Flatten the white ball slightly between your fingers and then stick it to the black ball with a bit of edible glue/water. (I used the heat from my hands).

Do the same with the other white ball of icing fondant. (This gives me a Spiderman vibe at the minute!)

Then, take the edible pen and place black dots for the pupils.

To add character to your ladybird, place the black dots looking to the side or upwards or downwards. If you put the dots directly in the centre of the white, the ladybird will look a little startled.

To create a smile, use a scallop tool or the end of a straw, lightly press this underneath the eyes.

And there you have it, ladybirds with faces.
