How to make easy Alien Cupcake Toppers - Tutorial (1 Viewer)

While still enjoying the summer holidays, I thought it might be nice to put together a tutorial on some Alien Cupcake Toppers that I recently made. In keeping with the easy theme, I have made them in numerous colours for effect. If you decide to make them, you can stick with one colour or let your imagination run wild. You could also add your own twist by adding different patterns or even hair.

I like them just as they are, so here's how to make them.

You will need some of the following equipment, I have listed everything I have used, but you can use alternatives if you prefer.

These are the cutters you will need to make the Alien Cupcake Toppers. I have placed each piece of equipment next to the shape so you can see the sizes I have used. Below I will show you a step-by-step guide on how to make them.

The toppers I make are placed on dummy cupcakes to give you an overall effect.

1 Roll out your coloured icing and cut out a circle the same size as your cupcake.

2 Stick the circle to the top of your cupcake using jam, or if you are sticking it to a cupcake dummy like me, then use water.

3 Indent the icing using the small pastry cutter.

4 This is to make the Alien mouth.

5 For added definition, I added smile dents with my ball dotting tool. If you do not have one, use the rounded end of the cocktail stick instead.

6 Now roll out some white icing fondant for the eye, and cut out a circle using your cutter.

7 Stick the white circle to the centre of the topper using a little water.

8 Now indent the cheek areas using the end of the straw.

9 Roll out a small piece of black icing fondant for the pupil and cut it out using your oval cutter.

10 Remove the excess icing and then cut the oval just over halfway.

I did this so it won't show through when I placed the eyelid colour on the top.

11 Stick the pupil on the white section of the eye using a little water.

12 Now cut out an eyelid using the larger oval cutter. (Believe it or not, this is the same icing and mat I have used throughout this tutorial, but the lighting angle shows the mat as purple).

13 Remove the excess icing and then cut the eyelid just over halfway using your palette knife.

( Ensure you have cleaned your knife properly. I didn't, so if you look closely at the following picture, you can see a little of the black icing has transferred onto the orange where the eyelid meets the eye).
14 Stick the orange eyelid to the topper using a little water. Keep the extra piece you cut off, as we will use this for the ears later.

15 Indent the eyelid using the ball tool.

16 Now roll a small piece of black icing to make an eyebrow.

17 Stick it to the eye with a little water.

18 Now, using part of the excess eyelid, make a triangle shape using your thumb and finger.

19 Then, using a stitching tool, create an indent in the triangle. If you don't have a stitching tool, you can use the pointed end of your cocktail stick instead.

20 Then indent the ear using the ball dotting tool or the rounded end of your cocktail stick.

21 Stick the ear to your topper using a little water.

Repeat the process for the other ear.

22 Now roll a very small white ball of icing for the eye shine/reflection.

23 Stick to the pupil of the eye using a tiny bit of water.

And there you have it, a cyclops alien. I made them in multiple colours so you can see what they look like.

I do hope you like them and enjoy making them yourself or with the kids.
