I suppose it's down to personal preference and where you are from. The tradition in Cornwall has always been jam first and then the cream, so I can understand local outrage on it. Whereas in places like Devon and London, they opt for clotted cream and then the jam. (According to sources, the Queen uses the Cornish method).
However, if you split the scone in two and put cream on one side and jam on the other, you can sandwich them together depending on where you are from, thus not offending anybody in the process. Or take a picture of them and not get lynched in the process.
