Hi Celeste, looking at the recipe and the lack of leavening agent I would agree and opt to add at least half a teaspoon of baking soda to the mix and once all the batter is mixed bake it straight away. It's always better to start off with a lower amount of soda to see if you get the rise you are looking for, then look to increase the amount if it's not quite there yet.
