How to make easy Panda Cupcake Toppers (1 Viewer)

Here is how to make Icing fondant Panda cupcakes.

Firstly you will need to make a batch of cupcakes of your choice; I made chocolate cupcakes for this task.

You will need, a mat or clean work surface, icing sugar (US - confectioners sugar) black and white icing fondant, buttercream or chocolate fudge icing, two teaspoons or a piping bag with a large open-topped nozzle, a knife, a scallop tool or straw, a rolling pin and some circle cutters and circle plunge cutters if you have them, a water pen or a paintbrush and some water.

1. Lightly dust your mat or work surface with icing sugar. (For US patrons Confectioners sugar is the same thing).

2.jpg

2. Grab a blob of white icing and roll out using your rolling pin, you want it to be about 3mm thick or equivalent to the thickness of a pound coin.

3. Before cutting the icing with a circle cutter measure the cutter against the top of your cupcake to ensure you have enough to cover it.

4. Place a blob of buttercream or chocolate fudge on top of your cupcake either by piping a blob onto it or scooping it on using two teaspoons. (One teaspoon to scoop the other to scrape the chocolate buttercream off onto your cupcake).

5. Now cut a circle out of your rolled icing/fondant and place directly on top of your cupcake, use your fingers in a soft circular motion to smooth the icing circle over the top of your cupcake.

6. Do the above process for each of your cupcakes until they are all covered.

7. Now we need to roll out the black icing fondant and then cut out lots of circles for the eyes and ears.

The black circles for the ears and eyes need to be larger than the inner white circles of the eyes. I used the medium circle plunge cutter that I had for the outer circles of the eyes and ears. If you do not have a circle cutter simply roll small balls of black icing fondant in your hands and then flatten with your finger and thumb by squeezing.

8. For the ears roll a black circle but cut it in half and place at the top of your cake (if you imagine your cupcake to be a clock face put the ears at 11 and 1). Stick it using a tiny dab of water, I use a water pen, but you can use a paintbrush. If using a paintbrush dip your brush in the water and then dab the excess water off onto some kitchen towel before using to stick the fondant together. If you don't take off the excess water, the colours will bleed into each other.

9. Once the ears are stuck now place a dab of water on the white face and then stick the eyes on the face as shown below.

10. For the inner white circle I cut out the circles with my plunge cutters, if you do not have one you can roll a smaller white ball and flatten it with your fingers, once done stick to the black section of the eye with a little water, however, ensure the white circle is smaller then the black circle. Also, ensure the white circles are not thick if you look at the third pic you want them to be about as thin as the circle on the right. (The one on the left is too thick).

The Left circle is too thick for the eyes, but the one on the right is fine.

Dab a little water on the black eyes as shown above and then stick the white section of the eyes on as below.

11. Now roll a really small black ball for the pupil, I did not flatten these; to add character to your cupcakes place the pupils at different angles or looking away for the added fun factor.

12. Now roll another ball for the nose but try and make it a little oval in shape by squeezing the top and bottom slightly. Now stick this on again using the waterpen or paintbrush.

13. Now dab a little water on the face and then stick the nose on, then you will need the knife to score a line under the nose.

14. Now use the scallop tool or straw to make the smile.

15. Once the face is complete use a dry paintbrush to dust off any icing sugar or confectioners sugar from the ears or eye area, also remove any scraggly pieces of icing fondant that are showing.

Then enjoy!
