The fire north of me is being called the most destructive fire in California history...It's just been a horrible fire year.

Camp Fire is now California's most destructive wildfire

It's terrible Bill I was watching the news this lunchtime and they mentioned that, I believe there are 44 deaths now and hundreds still missing. I can't imagine how horrible it must be to live anywhere near to it and wonder if you're next to lose everything.

You take care. xx

We're not real close, these are rural communities, but they had no proper warning, and the wind pushed the fire so fast. People were abandoning their cars and running. Several were found in their cars. Tell me this isn't frightening

A Guy

It doesn't bear thinking about, it must have been horrifying just trying to drive through there. :anguished:

Fire is frightening when you're not near it, let alone when you have to drive through it with your kids in the car.:dizzy: I'm so glad they managed to get out unharmed especially with the minimal visibility and the emergency services coming the other way. That's far too close for comfort. :(

I know there's still over a hundred people missing, it is so sad and I can't imagine the terror the people in the area must be feeling. :scream:

Oh wow! Really? That's very, very sad. I've recently seen some of the animals that they managed to rescue, and they're in an awful state. I hope those that are fleeing gain safe passage along the way and those that are lost manage to be found. All we can do is hope for a better day. :praying:

View out my bedroom window at 4PM today, smoke from the fire. Sun picture no filter

Fire is approx. 150-200 miles northish from me. Been like this for a week. Our air quality is worst in the world right now :(

Wildfire smoke brings world's worst air quality to northern California

It's horrendous, I've just been looking at a report and the missing people is now over 600 and the dead has gone up to over 60 after they found some more bodies.

This is a real disaster area I'd say and I saw the report about the air quality and looking at those photos you can understand why, especially given the distance you are from them. I don't think I've seen anything but you know how it started?

The death toll from the Camp Fire in northern California increased to 71 people while 1,011 people are unaccounted for

9,700 houses and 144 apartment buildings destroyed

It was 45 percent contained as of Friday evening and posed no immediate threat to populated areas

No rain in sight, maybe next week some.

I hadn't heard, will be a while, speculation is the utilities power lines. Their stock has taken a beating expecting the worse.

It's definitely a disaster and heartbreaking to think what people have lost. We'll have to wait and see if they can find out how it started until then we shouldn't really speculate but of course people will. :(

After the news leaves and people are left to pick up the pieces, it must be horrible trying to get help then, and many found themselves underinsured.

Santa Rosa was the hardest-hit city, with entire neighborhoods burned to ashes. But as of late August, only nine of nearly 2,700 single-family homes lost here had been rebuilt, according to figures from the city’s permitting office. Another 520 or so were under construction.

This is very long, but this is the hardest hit area in Santa Rosa, the city where my Mom, oldest brother, and nephew live. While they escaped unscathed, the area was hard hit

I skimmed over a lot of that article Bill, but got the gist of it. We rent but it's down to the homeowner to insure the building, we insure the contents because they belong to us.

Towards the end of the article I saw mention the way the people now want their homes built with windows on the street side. Over this side of the pond that is the normal way of building, the living faces the front, or road, and the bedrooms are towards the back away from traffic noise.

That's one of the problems here, because they were only built as holiday lets it didn't matter about having a view but how many dwellings they could get on the plot. Mine and my neighbours property are built sideways on so the gable end faces the road and the other gable end has the kitchen door set in it. You don't see what's going on, one side has windows that look out onto the shared drive and the other side has the door which would have been the front door and the windows that side look onto the back gardens of the neighbours.

What happened with your family Bill, did they manage to go back and live in the area?

My family didn't have to leave, the fire never affected the areas they live in. As I mentioned, they escaped unscathed. A Guy

Oh! sorry I thought you meant they escaped in time before the fire got to them. I heard on the news that rain had been forecast for the area, has it arrived yet?

That's what I thought too.

I do hope the affected people get the aid/housing and support they require. I heard a storm was brewing which I'm hoping is incorrect as the winds will cause further problems. Instead, I hope Mother Nature gives you all that you need to help extinguish the flames. 💖

I agree Angie, they are going to need lots of help and support after what they've been through. It seems as if we're losing our set seasons these days, they just aren't normal anymore, at one time you knew when to expect Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and what weather each would bring. These days though they're all over the place and it's not unusual to get Winter weather in Summer and vice versus, go out in the morning in t-shirts and need your woollies to come home in. brrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm of the same mind.

When Han was born I remember walking around in a strappy summer top in October and thinking this isn't right. As a kid, we were getting wrapped up for the winter spells then but now we've been known to have snow in April which is madness. I do think the seasons have changed and everything seems later. I don't miss the bonkers weather on the school run anymore either like you say I'd be in winter woollies in the morning then in the afternoon I'd be getting my shorts out.

Hopefully, it is just a phase and everything will eventually balance itself out.

I don't know what it is at the minute but the more I seem to do the less I seem to get done. I constantly find myself with more and more tasks yet once I've done one another four appear. I read somewhere the other day that it's to do with Mercury and planets etc moving/aligning or something like that, my friends all seem to be having the same issue. Either that or the world's gone bonkers because we're on Thanksgiving/Black Friday and Christmas countdown! :dizzy:

I also heard on the radio today about the David Attenborough Christmas Jumper or David Attenbrrrr as they are calling it. I know Han will probably need another one again this year for school so was wondering what they were like. I thought they'd be full of animals or weird creatures but it's just David's face on the front of it. :dizzy: It would have been wonderful if it'd have been a talking one now I'd definitely have had one of those bad boys!...Back to the drawing board me thinks.
