A range of tiered and carved cakes that I have made.
This football cake was a quick and easy design, perfect for celebrating my father-in-law's 80th birthday. Knowing his passion for football and the time constraints, I opted for a convenient solution – a football topper kit purchased from Amazon. To make the pitch, I dusted the surface with sugarflair dusts fusion green and moss, then used my PME hexagonal cutters for the border shapes. Ideally, I should have extended the hexagons to the edge of the board, as this would have enhanced the football-themed aesthetic I was going for. However, I added a few extra players and the number 80 instead. To bring the game to life, I strategically positioned one of the gold circular ball decorations around the net, making it appear as though the...
Here is the 18th birthday cake I made for my daughter. It comprises of 3 tiers, a 5-inch, 7-inch and 9-inch cake. Two tiers are made of up of chocolate chip Madeira cake, and the base is a dummy tier. This is probably the most expensive, busiest, time-consuming, head-scratching cake that has really pushed me. I'm not sure what was going on with the icing/fondant on the day, but it's the first time I've ever had to triple-cover a cake tier! The top tier was covered in two layers of white icing before it was eventually covered in Renshaw Fuschia, the new and improved icing. This gave me the smooth finish I was looking for. The middle tier was covered in white M&S icing and topped with Leopard Print Cake Wrap from Sugar Fables. This...
This is the recent Bob the Builder cake I made for my Dad's 70th Birthday. The cake is an 8-inch Madeira filled with jam and buttercream. It was then double iced in both white fondant and then pastel green fondant, which enabled me to get a smooth finish on the cake and ensured that nothing showed through, as I didn't have a lot of pastel green icing if I needed to recover it. Most of the decorations are made from Saracino modelling paste to help with their structure, such as Bob the Builder, the shed, the bird boxes and the upright flowers. For the rest, I used regular Renshaw Icing Fondant. The decorations were all made using a wood grain effect, as my Dad makes lots of things out of wood. the cobble effect on the base was also...
Here is my Deano Dinosaur cake! It's not your average 17-year-old's cake, but when it's your own daughter, and you beg her to let you make her one because you like the theme so much, what can she say? We did watch Jurassic park over the weekend, so it's definitely in keeping with the theme. I had great fun making this, and I'm so happy by the cheerful Dino vibe she brings to the cake. In fairness, I have offered to make my daughter another cake as a thank you for letting me make this one. The cake is a 6-inch Madeira, covered in chocolate fudge icing and covered in Renshaw Icing, the model was made using Saracino Modelling Paste. Thanks, Julie, for the demo; the dinosaur came out a treat! Cake Showcase How to...
So it's official, we're now celebrating 10 years! Whoop, whoop! So for that, I decided to make a cake. Seeing as the site helps with cake baking and decorating, what better theme than to make all things cake and baking! Han got involved in this one and made a few items. She even made me a miniature edible version of my book, which I have put pride of place in the centre. We had lots of fun making the ingredients and cake toppers, Han's incredibly proud of her whisk, and I love my strawberry tart. The cake went through many changes before we finally settled on the design. It originally started off on a shiny gold board and had a purple blanket on the top. But after a lot of trial and error, we finally settled on the above. As the...
This was a drunken-themed birthday cake that I made for my husband's 50th birthday. The cake is a 6-inch Madeira which is one of his favourite cakes. When baked I added extra moisture by adding a stock syrup to the cake when it came out of the oven. Once levelled, I then filled it with jam and covered it in golden marzipan. I used white icing fondant, autumn gold, and jet black Renshaw icing for the top layer. The cake was then topped with a sleepy replica of my husband holding an empty champagne bottle. I made his hands and face using white Saracino modelling paste mixed with Paprika Sugarflair food dye to make his skin tone. For the champagne drip, I mixed piping gel with gold lustre dust. The dots, Confetti and streamers were...
This ladybird cake is a relatively easy design, and the decorations can also be made in advance. The cake itself was a 6-inch victoria sponge filled with strawberry jam and then covered in white icing fondant. The grass is lincoln green, and the blade shapes were made using a cutter. I made the ladybirds a few days before so that they had time to dry out and were easier to handle. They were made from Renshaw Poppy Red and Jet Black icing. I painted the flying swirls onto the cake using a fine paintbrush and edible black sugarflair dye. The gold 'Happy Birthday' topper was purchased in a set from Amazon. So here we have it, the finished Harry Potter Slytherin Cake with edible Sorting Hat, Wand, Uniform, Robe and Scarf. Han designed the cake and made the wand. I made everything else. The cake consists of a 5-inch and 7-inch Madeira cake. I filled the top tier with jam and the bottom tier with chocolate fudge icing as requested by the birthday girl. The cake colours used were white, grey, emerald green, and black icing from Renshaw. The 16-topper is made from black acrylic and was washed before being inserted into the cake. To cover the board, I lightly marbled it using grey and white icing mixed together, and for the Sorting Hat, I mixed chocolate and brown icing and then dusted it with black lustre. Overall, Han loves the...
So with it being John's birthday, I finally had time to make him a cake this year. Usually, he reminds me about the day before, and I've never got all the stuff I need, or I'm making one for somebody else. So after patiently waiting two years, he finally gets this one. Now in all fairness, it nearly went in the bin! Because when I first started decorating it, I squished the sides, and all the filling came out. 🤨Anyway, after a few deep breaths and a little chat with myself, I finally managed to salvage the cake and make this summer treat! My first thought was to name it Buttercream Blitz, but then John came up with Summer Blizzard due to a play on snow/buttercream. I thought, why not? Well, he is the birthday boy after all, so it...
