A range of tiered and carved cakes that I have made.
This is a Meadow Cake that was a recent request from my god-daughter for her 8th birthday. Her definition was as follows:- Meadow cake:- A small scene of a meadow that includes, flowers, insects, baby bunnies and lambs with green grass. I must admit that this is one of the busiest cakes that I have done due to the number of flowers on it, but I have learned with kids that more is more and what they want they get so this was my interpretation of her requirements. The more I played with this one and built it up, the more I liked it, it has colour definition, a laid back nature to it but has a vibrant edge that appeals to the youngsters. The cake was a sponge, filled with buttercream and jam then covered in party green icing; it...
My Dad is due to turn 65 this year and rather than make him a cake that merely represented his age; I thought I would create something fitting and fun to help celebrate his birthday! That's when I came up with Animal! I'm making two cakes this week, so in order to help prep in advance, this one is actually a fruit cake. Once baked and cooled, I covered the fruit cake in marzipan and white icing and then set about the arduous task of cutting the fur which looks like feathers (that was after the three deliveries of every pointed cutter known to man and a mix up with the icing!) The icing colours I used for the fur are Ruby Red and Poppy Red Renshaws icing. Fur/ Feathers: - In order to create the fur/feather-like shape, I used two...
This is a 2D Penguin Cake that I made for our friends on the run-up to Christmas. It is a festive fruit cake, covered in marzipan and then topped with white rolled icing. The black and yellow icing is Renshaws, and the edible pearls are actually Halloween Sugar Pearls which were bought from Make A Wish Cake Shop via Amazon, as was the Merry Christmas sign. The penguin design was created using a cutter from Lakeland; the base was covered in small black circles that were cut in half to make a border, and then to finish off, I then made the penguin furry by scoring a veining tool through the icing. To finish off the year, I thought I would create another 2D cake, albeit this time make it into a Rudolph Cake. The cake itself is a sponge and filled with lashing of jam! I covered it using rolled out white icing and then applied the design using the following tools. To create Rudolph, I rolled out Chocolate Renshaws Icing and then used a Katy Sue Knitting Design Mould to impress into the icing and create a wool effect. To do this I laid the mould over the pre-rolled icing and then rolled over it with a rolling pin thus imprinting the design into the icing, I then lightly peeled away the mould to reveal the knitted design. I then proceeded to cut out the reindeer shape and red nose using a Mason and Cash cookie cutter. The...
Here is the latest cake that I made for my daughter's birthday as per her request. The cake itself is a 7-inch chocolate sponge cake that I covered and filled with chocolate fudge icing. The Super Mario, Luigi and Yoshi figures were bought from a toy store and were pre-washed in hot soapy water; they were then left to air dry before being placed onto the cake. The icing colours are Renshaw Yellow for the stars and coins, Lincoln Green (the darker green of the two) which I used for the pipe and hills and Poppy Red for the number and name. The other icing was plain white pre-dyed using Sugarflair dyes, the sky colour is baby blue, the brickwork is chocolate, and the lighter green is party green. These were dyed prior to the cake...
Here is a two-tier fruit cake that I recently made for my mother in laws 70th birthday. Both tiers were covered in marzipan, I then layered the top tier with Renshaws pink ready to roll icing and the base was then covered in baby blue coloured icing which was pre-dyed the day before with Sugarflair concentrated dye and left to rest. The pattern in the base tier and the strip for the top tier is the Katy Sue Vintage Rose design mould, and the peony flowers were made using the Easiest Peony cutter ever made by FMM. I did add a little Tylo powder to the icing before making the flowers so that they would harden and hold their shape.
This saw blade tool cake was made for my Dad who has recently celebrated 25 years in business. The cake itself is a marble cake, covered in icing fondant which was dyed using, paprika, autumn leaf and brown sugarflair (concentrated) dyes to make a wood grain effect. The grey edible saw blade icing was made by mixing black and white icing together to make a deep grey colour. The hammer handle was made using the autumn leaf dye along with a little tangerine dye added in. I shaped the top of the hammer using my hands, I rolled a large sausage and then flattened the ends by hammering it lightly onto the work surface. The spanner was made by rolling a sausage shape and then flattening it, then I rolled two balls, flattened them and then...
Here is a 6 inch Easter Bunny Cake that I have made for the Easter celebrations. The cake is a Victoria Sponge, covered in pistachio green pre-dyed icing, surrounded by a white picket fence. The blossom flowers were pre-cut and inserted with white edible dragee balls. The ‘Happy Easter’ writing was made using a Katy Sue mould and the eggs are Mini Eggs. The bunny rabbit was pre-made using white, grey and pink icing.
This is a strawberry flavoured Madeira cake, lightly covered in stock syrup for extra moisture. It is filled with strawberry milkshake buttercream and strawberry jam and then covered in white icing to base it, then re-covered in claret coloured icing to give a lovely smooth finish. The ribbon on the ear is hand-rolled poppy red Renshaw's icing, and the swirl is Fuschia Renshaw's icing also. The flowers on the board are claret coloured blossoms, and the eyes are black Renshaw's decor icing. I decided not to cover the base of the board on this cake as it took away the impact the cake had. It actually stood out better on the silver board than when I tried to cover it.
