We would like to take this opportunity to wish a true hero Captain Tom Moore a very Happy 100th Birthday today. Photo by Capture the Light Photography Not only was he a war veteran, but he continues to serve and has recently raised over 30 million pounds for the NHS by completing 100 garden laps using his walker, he did it to raise money for the NHS in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and to say thank you to them for looking after him after a fall and a broken hip. His original hopes were to raise £1000 and as you can see he has smashed that. He's quoted as saying that 'his legs may be tired, but his mind is racing', and he's hoping to be back very soon with other ways in which he can help people. His words of advice to us are 'Please...
Calling all bakers and cake makers! You'll be pleased to know that even though we're on lockdown, you'll still be able to go to Cake International albeit via the screen. So set aside some time on either Friday 24th or Saturday 25th April and get ready to learn about all things cake. Remember it doesn't matter if it's raining outside, the kids are causing a pile-up in the kitchen all you have to do is grab yourself a brew and be wowed by all things cake. For those of us homeschooling, it's a great way to indulge your kids in a creative afternoon and a fantastic way to finish off the week. The event promises to deliver some of your favourite cake artists, such as Molly Robbins and Paul Bradford, who will be hosting the events on...
Sadly it has recently been reported that Sandi Toksvig will be stepping down from her hosting duties on Bake Off to pursue other projects. Fans were sad to learn that her final appearance in the tent will be on the upcoming Stand Up 2 Cancer episode. Sandi has stated that she has had a wonderful time being on the show and made many lifelong friendships. She has said 'Unusually I am departing from the Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work. As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.' Noel has confirmed that he will miss his fellow baking host but has thoroughly enjoyed all the times they got to play together in the tent. We wish Sandi well on her new adventures.
There are a lot of new trends happening this year, whereby sweet meets savoury or vice versa. I'm usually a sweet treat kinda gal and can get my head around bacon with pancakes and maple syrup; however, I don't think that even I would be able to push to a Luther Burger! Now for those of you that don't know a Luther Burger is a regular burger with cheese or bacon whereby the bun is replaced with a glazed ring doughnut, and no I'm not kidding. Legend has it that it was named after Luther Vandross and apparently may have been one of his favourite foods. This merging of savoury and sweet takes me to the scene in the film Elf when Buddy mixes sweets, spaghetti and chocolate syrup. Who knows maybe Buddy was ahead of the game! Either way...
So I recently spotted this doing the rounds, and I'm finally getting ready to posting about it! There is a pie that has been amazing and baffling the internet in equal measure, and it turns out to be a Transparent Lemon Meringue Pie. According to reports, a chef in Leeds has been baking a pie with a difference, one that has a curd that you can see-through. Chef Dempsey started creating his Lemon Meringue Pie 2.0 sometime last year. After perfecting his recipe, he explains how the pie has a regular base, meringue top but with a top-secret translucent filling that takes two whole days to make and is a closely guarded secret. He is currently serving the dish in the restaurant where he works and it's going down a treat. Seeing as...
So whether you think it's a biscuit or a cake, (it's a cake, by the way, the clues in the title 😂 ), you'll be pleased to know that no matter what you classify them as there is now a new version of the delectable tangy treat, for a limited time anyway! Yes, that's right, it has been reported that the New Pineapple Jaffa Cakes by McVities are being sold in-store and online at Morrisons for £1 a pack. With 10 in a pack, there is more than enough for taste testing and deliberating, and they're good to share too. So why not start the debate and enjoy them while you can. :yum: Pineapple Cake Bar versions have also been spotted at Tesco so pick up a pack soon! Enjoy.
For those of you that are not aware, Renshaw has been running a recent voting campaign to find out what's your 'Colour of the Year'. So now that the poll's closed and the votes counted, we can now find out what the winning colour is going to be. Cue drum roll... Therefore, without further ado we're pleased to announce that their Sapphire Blue was a clear winner, beating its rival by nearly 200 votes! It's no surprise considering that this year's trends are all about blue hues and with Pantone's Classic Blue named as it's own colour of the year by interior designers and homewares it's the cool, calming, confident colour to look out for. If you're all about the blues, then check out my 50th Birthday cake for a little inspiration or...
I have recently read about some of our friends in the States who have been using Beef Mince in their bakes instead of the Sweet Stuff. Now in fairness, you have to admit that unless you've made the bake before if something is listed as Mincemeat, you're going to assume it's of the beefy kind. However, when we talk about Mincemeat, Tart or anything Christmassy we're always going to be talking about the sweet variety. So you can imagine the dismay of all those who are ready to make a lovely tart with their Mincemeat and end up with a concoction that's reminiscent of Rachel's Trifle in Friends! Here are a few of the stories and posts in question...
Have you ever wondered how big you could make a cake? Well, bakers in India have managed to make one of the most colossal cakes in the world, beating 'China's Fruitcake Record' by a landslide and hitting a new Guinness World Record in the process. Around one and a half thousand bakers and chefs from Kerala set about creating the vanilla cake and covered it with lashings of chocolate ganache. The overall length of the cake came in at a whopping 17,388ft (5300 metres) and weighed approximately 27,000kgs. Now that's what you call a cake of epic proportions. Once the cake was measured and confirmed as a record-breaker, the surrounding crowd then devoured it in less than ten minutes; I wonder if that was also a record! Either way...
Ooh, don't you love a good biscuit! Well now it's a National Holiday so why don't you whip up a batch of these beautiful melt in the mouth cookies. The fun with shortbread is that they can be cut into any shape, be dressed up in any decoration or lightly dusted to make a simple treat. If you do try your hand at making them, they may also come in handy for an upcoming Valentine's Day treat too! All you'll need are a few heart cutters and a little jam. Other cookie alternatives, you may wish to try adding to the recipe are 'sprinkles' which will add lots of colours, choc chips for chocolatey goodness, apricots or cranberries for a little zing etc. or you could simply use glace icing or pipe them. However, you decorate them, be sure to...
